Tahana’s Story

Tahana is a 26-year-old mum to a little girl and is currently expecting her second child. She first connected with Brave Foundation at 22 when she was pregnant with her daughter Nova, navigating pregnancy as a single parent.

“I was a single young mum so it was like, a lot.”

After meeting a Brave Foundation representative at a community event, Tahana joined the Supporting Expecting and Parenting Teens (SEPT) Program, where she found much-needed support. Since graduating, she has joined the Empowering the Voices of Young Parents (EVYP) advisory group and is a passionate advocate for young parents.

While in the SEPT Program, Tahana set goals to strengthen her parenting skills and become her best self for her herself and her daughter.

“So, a few of my goals were um, to go to parenting classes to make sure I was doing everything I could so that my child could get the best out of me. I did a tonne of parenting classes and programs.”

Alongside building confidence as a parent, Tahana was also managing some health issues. With support from her Brave mentor, she was able to plan for her daughter during periods of illness and recovery.

“I have a lot of health issues and Brave helped me plan and organise support for my daughter when I was sick, my recovery and all that.”

Inspired by the support she received and impact of Brave on her life, Tahana joined EVYP and began her studies in Community Services, with a desire to support other young parents on their own journeys.

Things look a little different during her second pregnancy, as she and her partner share the excitement awaiting baby’s arrival.

“I’m pregnant now and I don’t have to do it alone this time. It’s sometimes been difficult to remember to share this time around because [baby’s] dad is really involved.”

Despite some nerves about the future, Tahana is optimistic and says the future is ‘bright’ for her and her family.

“It’s terrifying to think I have a child who’s gonna be starting school next year. It’s definitely a big transition for both of us. [I’m excited about] growing with my child – knowing I’ll be young enough to do cooler stuff when she’s a bit older.”

Her advice for other young parents who might be at the beginning of their journey?

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help and take it when it’s offered.”
