Brave Foundation launches Young Dads Program in Victoria
Brave Foundation has officially launched its Young Dads Program in Victoria, following a successful pilot.
The pilot achieved strong outcomes in supporting young fathers to reach their goals through tailored mentoring, education and employment pathways, and community connections.
The program was formally launched at Whitten Oval on Wednesday 8 October, with Parliamentary Secretary for Men’s Behaviour Change Tim Richardson MP in attendance.
A significant three-year contribution from the RM Ansett Trust will enable Brave to transition the initiative into a full-scale program, continuing its vital support for young dads across Victoria.
Brave CEO Jill Roche reflected on the milestone.
“This program was born from a clear gap in parenting support – young fathers were missing out. While there are many valuable programs for mothers, few recognise the role and relationships of young fathers,” she said.
“Through Brave’s daily work with young families, we saw so many dads striving to be present and positive in their children’s lives, but lacking targeted support. We are sincerely grateful for this funding and for RM Ansett Trust for believing in the potential of these young men and helping us create lasting intergenerational change.”
Co-designed with young fathers with lived experience, and developed in collaboration with researchers and community partners, the program empowers young dads by providing the tools, guidance and connections they need to build brighter futures for themselves and their children.
Victorian Young Dads Mentor Oliver Doriean reflected on the impact of the pilot.
“This past year working on the pilot, I’ve seen how much this program can really help young dads – giving them confidence, support and a space where they feel understood.”
“It’s encouraging to know people believe in the program. With the funding and transition to a full program, I’m excited to see what we can achieve next and how much more we can support young dads in Victoria over the next three years.”
Young Dad program participant James* said the support he received through Brave’s Young Dads Program helped him build his confidence.
“This program changed my life. But more than that, it changed my child’s future.
“It’s been amazing to have someone believe in me. Now I know I can be the dad my child deserves.”
