“I fell pregnant with Eli when I was 19. I had just finished school and was working full time.”
“I’d always wanted to be a young mum. It is definitely not easy, but it is also one of the most rewarding things ever.”
Taylor started the Supporting Expecting and Parenting Teens Program because she felt ‘stuck’ as a young mum.
“I think the hardest thing about being a young mum is that it is easy to get stuck in a mindset that you’re a mum and that there is nothing else you can do,” Taylor said.
“Before I started with Brave, I wanted to study but thought ‘I’m a mum’. I felt very stuck.”
She set goals to move into their own home with partner Anton, study further education and return to work. Now Eli will see his mum pursue a career in aged care, having been accepted to study a Certificate 3 in Individual Support.
“My whole life I’ve been very passionate about caring for the elderly. I looked after my grandparents and that made me even more passionate about the career.”
Peta said even when Taylor doubted her ability to reach her goals, she just took it one step at a time.
“Taylor is an amazing mum to Elijah and nothing is too hard for her. Even when she said, ‘I don’t think I can do that’, she still listened to me and we broke down her goals into little steps. She did it each and every time. She truly is an inspiration,” Peta said. “Peta really helped me realise it is possible to do so much more. You’re not just a mum, you can do anything you put your mind to. It sounds cringy but it’s true,” Taylor said.
